Late Dr. M.V. Shetty, MS, FRCS, FRFPS was eminent in several fields ; in his professional field of surgery, in rehabilitation and in the state - run institution of Home Guards. As a surgeon with the 1st private Surgical Specialty Hospital in Dakshina Kannada District, he was also distinguished Professor of Surgery at KMC, Honorary Medical Officer at Government Wenlock Hospital, Director of the Lions Limb Centre and Commandant of the D.K. Home Guards. His dedication earned him the respect of patients, colleagues, fellow doctors, students and the general public. He had the courage of his strong convictions and a humane code of practice to match. At the personal level he was known to have a keen appreciation of music, he played the tabla and young people, his students especially, always responded to his humorous and understanding way of dealing with them.The Trust established in his name has many firsts to its credit; the first nursing college in the private sector in the state began at BSc. Level progressing to MSc. and Ph.D. in 1987; Physiotherapy (first in Karnataka) at BPT level in 1991 progressing to MPT and Ph.D. level; Speech and Hearing at BASLP level in 1991 progressing to MASLP and Ph.D. Radiology at B.Sc. level in 1995, Medical Laboratory Technology at the degree level in 1996. Other courses conducted by the trust are the Diploma in General Nursing from 1993 and a postgraduate degree course, MSW in Social Work in 1999, B.A. in fine arts in 2007, a postgraduate Diploma in Classical Dance in 2010, a B.Ed Programme in ........The practice of health care and technological education is changing rapidly and the Trust will remain alert to these changes in the spirit of the tradition shaped by Dr. M.V.
