The Parkland College was founded by the Province of Saskatchewan in 1971 as Parkland Regional College (1973-2008). It was renamed Parkland College (2008). The college primarily serves the education and training needs of communities and industry partners in east central Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. The college is in a coalition with Cumberland College (Saskatchewan), which is located in Northeast Saskatchewan. The coalition shares a president and CEO is focused on improving operational efficiencies (resource use) and enhancing organization effectiveness (impact). Each of the two colleges has its own board of six governors, but the same six governors sit on each board.Bolstered with state support from the Illinois Public Junior College Act of 1965, "Illinois Junior College District 505" was established in March 1966 by a referendum of residents from incorporated and unincorporated areas surrounding Champaign-Urbana. The college was renamed Parkland Community College in 1967 before its first fall semester classes began. William M. Staerkel was Parkland's first president, serving the college from 1967 to 1987. While the first classes were held at temporary sites in downtown Champaign, the school's permanent campus opened in fall 1973.Parkland College has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Higher Learning Commission, since 1972. Its seven-member Board of Trustees is elected by the residents of the district, with each trustee serving a six-year term. The board provides local control and direction for the college, operating in accordance with Parkland's established Policies and Procedures. Working at Parkland College is more than a job. It introduces a shared vision and mission, as well as seven key values. Four strategic pillars stand on this foundation, accompanied by a set of goals and objectives to guide the Coalition’s efforts and measure its success.The plan introduces the concept of the “E-Shaped Learner.” While the colleges excel at developing technical skills, this model supplements them with entrepreneurial, electronic literacy, and employability skills. With the recent two-year extension of the initial two-year pilot, the Coalition is well positioned to implement the initiatives outlined in the plan, focusing on positive outcomes for the colleges’ students, regions, and employers.Parkland College offers adult basic education (ABE) and work essential skills training; college programming (business and industry; health care; computer training; general interest); and university programming. The college provides career counselling to students and other support services to help them be successful. ABE training enables students to obtain a Grade-12 equivalent certificate, which facilitates transition to either post-secondary education or employment. Work essential skills are needed for success in work, learning and life; they are the foundational skills that make it easier to learn all other skills.College programs are brokered from institutions such as Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Lakeland College (Alberta) and Conestoga College (Ontario) and other institute certificate programs. Select university programs are offered at the undergraduate and graduate level in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina. Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Western Trades Training Institute (WTTI), Parkland offers Crane and Hoist certification, Boom truck certification, and rigging programs.
